Idealizations of femininity as seen through the male gaze
The Scandinavian Center of Boston is thrilled to welcome mezzo soprano Christina English and pianist Christina Wright-Ivanova to Music Mondays to present their program “Fabricating Femininity” on Monday May 30, from 2pm to 3pm. They will explore—and subvert—idealizations of femininity as seen through the male gaze in art song, with women’s stories told through the words and music of Adelbert von Chamisso and Robert Schumann (selections from Frauenliebe und Leben), Pierre Louÿs and Claude Debussy (Trois Chansons de Bilitis), and Arne Garborg and Edvard Grieg (selections from Haugtussa). In contrast, they offer a modern telling from the female perspective, through the words and music of Sophie Hannah and Cheryl Frances Hoad (selections from One Life Stand).
